We came across this installation in Berlin which we noticed in a gallery window on Invaliden St. (sorry, no artists name). For a few moments it engaged our complete attention, perhaps because it was kind of unique. Although, I didn't like it. I felt that it kind of summed up my experience of Transmediale in general - a more intensive introduction to the world of pointless art!
So often during Transmediale I found myself asking "ok, but what's the point?" (much to the annoyance of those around me). This merely became a reaction to some of the art we were seeing. Someone even suggested this could be the focus of a new blog, which is maybe not such a bad idea. I can't help thinking that this in itself would be a pointless and rather negative exercise but since reflecting on Transmediale the above "art work" has become the source of much inspiration giving me new focus on identifying what that point is. Does art always have to have a point? Or can it simply have pure aesthetic quality?
Although I don't think I will ever be able to fully answer that question in this space, I hope to at least tackle it to some extent.
I will also highlight some pieces during Transmediale which I found rather pointless. Again, perhaps this may give my blog some momentum, at least attempting to create some dialogue with the art work I am experiencing.

can it simply have pure aesthetic quality?
I think that question itself is really 'of it's time' for example in an earlier period it might be hard to argue that art has anything but an aethetic quality, for a crude example, the Mona Lisa, can you really argue that this is not art, of course it is, but is it art with a point other than aesthetics?
To me this is about changes in culture and a shifting (and if I might be permitted to use another crass generalisation) of class politics, I mean that in the sense that art really did (I know it's hard to believe) belong much more to the rich, and ok maybe to say rich and idle is going to far but people with enough money to just enjoy aesthetics, literature, decoration, discussing philosophy and the history of art without being troubled by 'what is the point?' or 'how is this a productive thing?'
Changes in culture have brought people with, maybe uncounciously, a different 'work ethic', who feel that art should somehow 'do something' either instead of or as well as looking nice.
But I think we must be careful in having such a utilitarian viewpoint, because we run the risk of forgetting the positive values of being playful and creative for it's own sake, and not with an agenda.
In Armin's article he speaks of media art as:
[media art] had always been about the intersections of technology, culture and society, about where those different layers meet and create interesting ruptures and points of interventions for critical artists.
and while I am all in favour of this I can't help but feel that some media arts can demonstrate a reaction against philosophies of industrialisation and systemisation of culture by simply 'being' a playful work of art and not 'doing' the job of critical intervention.
Please understand I am not putting forth an either/or position just arguing there is room for both, as the ravers at Reclaim the Streets used to say 'It's not my revolution if I can't dance to it'
